E-natural-S spend quality time with multi-instrumentalists Collette & John
by Jennifer Ives
A new set of possibilities has opened for the budding songwriters of Simcoe County as Stellula Music: an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of students, their families, schools, and communities through music kicked off what promises to be a fruitful relationship.
On October 6, 2008 students at Elmvale District High School ( home of the E-natural-S songwriting club) were treated to a morning of virtuoso instrumentals, stunning vocals and a plethora of songwriting insights from Collette Savard and John Zytaruk. These talented musicians impressed their teen audiences with information, tips and examples of their extensive repertoire of songs. Articulate, honest and pertinent answers to questions from the floor left the students eager for more! Meeting with the E-natural-S after the show, Collette shared her songwriting challenges, experiences and encouraged the group with excellent suggestions for their own writing.
Not finished with Simcoe County yet, Collette and John trekked through the wilderness of Oro-Medonte to Orillia where they performed an evening concert at Boston Pizza for the Newpapers in Education programme. Publisher John Hammill and Editor Mark Bissett of the Orillia Packet and Times, both seemed to be enjoying the music along with Deb Brown and a crowd of NIE t-shirt clad fans as the duo traipsed through traditional roots, blues, jazz and even a few pop inspired tunes.
Brown, founder of Stellula, is a whirlwind packed in a tiny package; a focused, dedicated visionary who seems to run on 8 cylinders- all the time. Inspired by the work of Dale Russell and Artemis Chartier and the S.A.S.S. organization (School Alliance of Student Songwriters) and with significant support from Rowley Ramey, President and General Manager of the Horseshoe Resort, local Arts organizations such as the Orillia Folk Society, Mariposa Folk Festival and The Barrie Folk Society, and the encouragement of staff at many Simcoe County secondary schools, Stellula's intent is to foster creativity and its expression through music and other art forms students may choose.
Watch for future events featuring some of Canada's best songwriters, read the glowing reviews from students and staff, have a look at the photo gallery and maybe even hear a few of the songs our talented young writers are willing to share!
